At just 23 years old, Eduardo Dantas is still learning his mixed martial arts craft. He is far from his peak, but for now that is more than enough to become the second man to claim Bellator’s bantamweight title.
Dantas dominated defending 135-pound titleholder Zach Makovsky on theIR feet Friday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., but also showed off his improved wrestling skills.
It was his submission ability that finished Makovsky at 3:26 of the second round. Dantas put the champion to sleep with an arm triangle, forcing referee Keith Peterson to jump in and wave the fight off.
“This is what I do; I do it full time,” an excited Dantas said after improving to 14-2. “I came prepared and trained really hard. I gave it my all tonight.”
Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney was impressed but not surprised by Dantas’ effort. He expects more solid performances from the new champion.
“You’re looking at one of the best bantamweights in the world,” Rebney said. “He put on a great performance tonight.”
Makovsky, who was making the first defense of his title, falls to 14-3. The loss snapped Makovsky’s eight-fight win streak.

Keith Mills for Sherdog.comAlexis Vila, left, never managed to get his wrestling going against Luis Nogueira.
After suffering the first loss of his mixed martial arts career, Alexis Vila vowed never to look past an opponent. And he didn’t look past his bantamweight quarterfinal foe, Luis Nogueira.
